For many years, internet users around the world have made their broadband purchase decision based on speed, but on its own, speed is no longer a good predictor of a quality broadband experience. Addressing this, Opensignal launched a new metric earlier this year: Broadband Reliability Experience.

Broadband Reliability Experience measures users’ real-world broadband experience, looking at how easily households are able to perform typical tasks, such as joining an online meeting, listening to music or scrolling through social media.

In July, we used this metric to assess users' fixed broadband experience across 18 countries, detailed in our report Bridging the digital divide: unlocking reliable broadband for all. Unsurprisingly, wealthier countries tend to have better reliability, but urban areas of some middle-income countries scored more highly than rural areas of many high-income countries.

In the same report, Spain landed in 10th spot, despite its significant investment in Fibre to the Home (FTTH), which gave it the European No.2 spot for broadband download speed. This result highlights how using speed alone as a measure misses a trick.
